Energy — the precondition for everything else

A lecture by Prof. em. Dr. Lino Guzzella (former ETH president) at the IWP Lucerne, translated into the HDH why-format: causal chains from the kilowatt-hour to geopolitics.

Why expensive energy drives out the knowledge first

In the short run energy is price-inelastic — consumption barely reacts to price.

But in the long run, when energy stays expensive, first the energy-intensive processes migrate away, then the investment, finally the knowledge.

It is not the outage itself that is the problem, but the transient — the transition in which we are poorly positioned. The 16% come back, but slowly.

The calming factor and the energy density

Coal is the dirtiest primary carrier but practically unlimited — Guzzella expects its use to rise worldwide. From coal you can make gas, diesel, petrol and jet fuel.

07 / Climate — counted honestly

We don't just keep burning — we burn ever more

The CO₂ curve: first derivative always positive (we reduce nothing), second derivative positive — the curvature. We burn ever more.

Since Paris 2015 fossil use is not flat — it has risen 14%. The only real dip was the Corona lockdown.

By 2050 the world grows to 9.5 bn people. Those +1.5 bn have the same right to energy — denying it, Guzzella calls unethical.

The causation is purely economic: in the USA, switching from coal to cheap frack-gas halves CO₂. The market did more for the climate there than the declaration of intent in Europe.
